Syrian Civil War (2011–present)

Overview

Causes

Course

Protests (Mar 2011) → armed insurgency (2012) → sectarian civil war with ISIS's 2014 caliphate → Russian intervention (Sept 2015) turned the tide for Assad → ISIS territorially defeated (Baghouz, Mar 2019) → frozen conflict (2020–24) → the Nov–Dec 2024 HTS-led offensive collapsed the regime in 11 days. Post-Assad: al-Sharaa's transitional government pledged inclusivity; March 2025 coastal violence killed 1,000+ (mostly Alawite civilians per monitors — contested); July 2025 Suwayda clashes between Druze militias, Bedouin tribes, and government forces killed 1,000+ with ~200,000 displaced (ICG, Sept 2026); ISIS cells persist in the Badia; Israel seized the Golan buffer zone and strikes regularly; Türkiye/SNA pressure on the SDF continues. As of the September 2026 observation window, Syria is in a fragile transition, not a settled peace.

Casualties

Outcome & legacy (as of September 2026)

The Assad regime fell — the Arab Spring's last domino — but Syria's war mutated into a fragmented transition. Legacy: the century's defining refugee crisis, the rise and fall of ISIS's caliphate, the chemical-weapons taboo's erosion, and a cautionary tale of proxy war. The transitional government's ability to prevent sectarian fragmentation is the open question.
