Yemeni Civil War (2014–present)

21st Century & Ongoing Tier 1
Yemeni Civil War (2014–present)
Status: ongoing armed conflict, as of the September 2026 observation window. Large-scale frontline fighting reduced since 2022 truce efforts, but violence, US/Israeli strikes (2024–2025), and Houthi Red Sea attacks continue.
Overview
- Belligerents: Houthi movement (Ansar Allah, controlling Sana'a and the northwest, aligned with former president Saleh's forces until his 2017 killing). Versus: the internationally recognized Government of Yemen (Presidential Leadership Council since 2022; President Hadi before), supported by a Saudi-led coalition (Saudi Arabia, UAE and others; UAE backs the separatist Southern Transitional Council — a government ally with its own agenda). Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) and ISIS-Yemen operate as third parties. The US and UK conducted strikes against Houthi targets in 2024 (Operation Poseidon Archer); the US ran Operation Rough Rider (March–May 2025).
- Dates: Houthi takeover of Sana'a September 2014; Saudi-led intervention March 2015. Ongoing.
- Theater: Yemen — Sana'a, Hodeidah, Taiz, Marib, Aden and the south; Red Sea/Bab el-Mandeb (Houthi shipping attacks from late 2023).
Causes (attributed)
- Analysts trace the war to the collapse of Yemen's post-2011 transition: Houthi grievances against marginalization and the draft federal constitution; the Houthis' 2014 seizure of Sana'a; and the Saudi-led intervention framed by Riyadh as countering Iranian influence — a framing Iran and the Houthis dispute (the extent of Iranian material support is contested; the US and Saudi Arabia allege significant support, Iran denies directing Houthi operations).
- The Southern Transitional Council's separatist aims add a second axis: southern independence versus Yemeni unity (attributed to STC statements).
- Humanitarian agencies attribute the scale of civilian suffering substantially to the Saudi-led air campaign and blockade, and to Houthi sieges (notably Taiz), recruitment of children, and aid obstruction — all attributed claims.
Course
Houthis seized Sana'a (2014) and advanced south; Saudi-led Operation Decisive Storm began March 2015. Years of airstrikes, ground fighting (Taiz, Hodeidah, Marib), and a blockade produced what the UN called the world's worst humanitarian crisis. The 2018 Stockholm Agreement averted a Hodeidah assault. A UN-brokered truce (April–October 2022) sharply reduced fighting and largely held afterward. From late 2023 the Houthis attacked Red Sea shipping in stated solidarity with Gaza, prompting US/UK strikes (Jan 2024–Jan 2025). In March–May 2025 the US launched Operation Rough Rider — 339 strikes in 53 days, the most intense bombing since the Saudi air war's peak — ending with a Trump-announced ceasefire on 6 May 2025 (Yemen Data Project).
Casualties (attributed; wide methodological range — no figure presented as settled)
- ~28,700 reported fatalities (incl. ~7,500 civilians) by late 2024 — conservative incident-based count (ACLED-associated analyses; satellite/model-based studies converge on "at least 28,700"), explicitly excluding indirect deaths (factually.co synthesis).
- 70,000+ killed since January 2016 — ACLED (April 2019 report, via Al Jazeera), direct conflict deaths only.
- ~150,000+ deaths — higher estimates cited by outlets and diplomats, triangulating unrecorded and indirect deaths (UNVERIFIED as a consolidated figure).
- ~377,000 deaths by end of 2021 including indirect causes — UNDP 2021 projection (widely cited; not re-verified in this pass).
- 3,384 civilian deaths documented 1 Jan–30 Jun 2025 — UN Human Rights Office (stressed "the real toll is likely to be significantly higher").
- Operation Rough Rider: ≥238 civilians killed (incl. 24 children), 467 injured — Yemen Data Project; the Pentagon's 1057 report confirmed 153 civilian deaths from three April 2025 strikes (US DoD via SOFX, 2026).
- UN verified 742 grave violations against 652 children in 2025 (+27.3% vs 2024) — UN Secretary-General's annual report on children and armed conflict.
Current status (as of September 2026)
- No comprehensive peace settlement; the 2022 truce's de-escalation largely holds on main fronts but the conflict is unresolved; Houthis retain the northwest including Sana'a.
- Red Sea shipping attacks and retaliatory strikes defined 2024–2025; the May 2025 US–Houthi ceasefire ended the bombing campaign.
- Humanitarian crisis persists: ~17+ million food-insecure (2025 reporting); funding shortfalls severe.
Tracker pulse
- ACLED: primary event/fatality dataset; documented the 2022 de-escalation.
- Yemen Data Project: independent airstrike monitoring; documented Rough Rider in detail.
- UN OCHA / UN Human Rights Office: humanitarian and civilian-casualty reporting.
- UCDP: codes Yemen as active armed conflict (detail not directly retrieved).
- Debate: the true death toll is among the most methodologically contested of any current war (28,700 documented vs. 150,000+ modeled vs. 377,000 UNDP projection); responsibility for civilian harm is attributed by all sides to their opponents.
Validation tier
Tier 1 — 2+ independent trackers (ACLED + Yemen Data Project + UN Human Rights Office) with convergent active-conflict evidence; casualty totals explicitly presented as contested ranges.
UNVERIFIED points
- Consolidated death toll (no verified single figure; ranges span 28,700 to 377,000 depending on method).
- Extent of Iranian material support to the Houthis (alleged by US/Saudi Arabia; denied by Iran).
- Current frontline/control map as of September 2026.
- Exact civilian toll of Operation Rough Rider (YDP 238 vs. Pentagon 153 — different methodologies and scopes).
